nov 13th 2014h =

November 13th, 2006

So it’s november. November 13th actually. At 2014h. Which makes it approximately 840 hours since my last slightly-substantive post, and something a couple orders of magnitude more than that since my last real-post. Wow. I’m about to sit down over a bottle of wine and a couple daylight-ish hours off of work, and rectify that. You’ll see a number of back-dated posts start filling in. If *I* can remember what happened.

Basically, I’m in Geneva, working for a Harvard physics prof (Gabrielse) on an experiment (ATRAP) at this big particle smasher (CERN). We work long hours (a 12hour day is short, and if it takes you more than 12 hours to come back to work after leaving, we wonder where you are–do the math - and you’re right, we never have any idea what day it actually is unless we look at a computer) but we have a lot of fun (imean, when else do i get to climb on top of a 3T 20″ bore magnet and debug some 1kV 32pin cables, or transfer liquid helium into an experiment named Todd, or hit a 3m positron transfer line with a rubber mallet to make it line up right, or have to get rid of liters upon liters of excess liquid nitrogen…) and we might even get somewhere (if our string of disasters comes to an end) before the end of beam next sunday at 11pm (they shut CERN down over the winter because energy is too expensive).

Gasp for breath. I’m reachable almost all hours of the day on a rotating basis, so feel free to call me up (it’s a local call! 617 395 7869 or my house is +33 4 50 42 36 08 if you feel a need to call france…) And I’ll be home (cambridge MA) around dec 15th or 19th, then home (westerville OH) probably by the 21st-ish (anybody driving remotely that way?). In cambridge UK the 29th nov- 4th dec (anybody there that i dont know of ? holler out!) and seeking bids for the other three weekends in there. especially thanksgiving. what are we sposed to do for tgiving, with no families over here? crazy weird.

OK, lets jump back to June 6th, 6:08pm GMT+2. Lucas drops me an email that says BTW, dude, LG Barcelona…

gambol

October 9th, 2006

As I was sitting there checking my email for the umpteenth time today (it’s a slow monday…) I noticed google offering me the Dictionary.com Word of the Day - “gambol: to dance and skip about in play”. And I thought, that’s a good word. In fact, that’s a word worth writing a blog about. Why? Who knows. I like to gambol. I was gamboling in the lawn outside my apartment earlier today. I practically gamboled all the way to work on my bicycle, if that were possible; it’s a gorgeous ride. And yesterday? Yesterday I did gambol down the road at 7am, for the dawn breaking over Mt Blanc, with a single line of clouds in the foreground… and the moon kissing the shoulder of the Jura… ’twas gorgeous. Worth gamboling over.

that was a lie
